This proposed ground floor 'wrap-around' extension, basement and landscape redesign resulted in a fantastic open-plan kitchen, dining, utility and internal/external entertainment space. Our client provided us with the opportunity to transform their ground floor and change the way that they used the house on a day-to-day basis.

 

The brief included creating a clean, crisp, large room to the rear, whilst maximizing the use of glazing. This provided its own challenges, through avoiding what is commonly known as the greenhouse effect (overheating in the summer and heat loss in the winter). The solar-controlled and tinted glass was designed to limit this potential problem. The rear facade also included a cantilevered beam, allowing us to insert full glazing to the perimeter, wrapping around the corner and enabling our client to fully utilise their views to the newly-designed garden.

 

We also included, within the design, a basement below half of the existing house to accommodate a utility room, complete with wine coolers and additional appliances. The design method focused on minimising the requirement to underpin, through the insertion of a reinforced concrete structure within the existing footprint. This enabled us to create the room underground, whilst ensuring that our client's budget expectations were met.
